BREAKING NEWS: FCEABK WILL NOT RESUME AS NASU EMBARKS ON 14-DAY STRIKE.....
The Non-Academic Staff Union, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta (NASU-FCEABK) has on Monday, October 26th 2020 embarked on a 14-day strike, _The Academia_ reports.
This was made known to the press by the Union's chairman, Mr. Adewuyi Adekunle Waheed shortly after the strike began. He affirmed that the industrial action will last for 14 days and refused to comment on the effects it will have on academic activities.
In his words, he said; "This is a [non-teaching] staff matter, we commenced the strike today and it's going to last for 14 days.
"I know nothing about [academic activities], it lies in the hand of the management of the college.
"I don't know if we will call it off soon, what I just know is that the strike is on and the the reason to call it off is not before us. The reason for the strike is numerous."
Recall that _The Academia_ reported that the college will reopen fully for students on 2nd of November, but this new development puts the date in jeopardy as the activities of the Non-Academic staff is as vital as that of their Academic counterparts.
In light of this, _The Academia_ reached out to the Chairman of College of Education Academic Staff Union, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta (COEASU-FCEABK), Dr. Oluwakemi Oni, to ascertain the consequences of the NASU strike on classroom activities.
She made it known that it will definitely have an influence on the proposed resumption date and the college will have to find a way between extremes to pick a new date.
"I think it should have a little effect [on academic activities], since you are just resuming now. Had it been that you are on campus before, then you might not be affected.
"Without them [NASU], who will be the people that will be porters in the hostels? Who will make provisions of water and light? It is the duty of the NASU.
"Since the strike is for 14 days, the college can shift the resumption date to 9th of November." She concluded
_The Academia_ have also obtained credible Intel that the college had a brief meeting today over this issue, but the resolution was not made known to us.
Albeit, we can speculate that the newly revised academic calendar is still intact and the management is of strong will to complete the first semester examination before year 2020 runs out.
